Melrose Area Speech Team took First Place at the Fergus Falls Speech Meet this weekend! We had four Champion Speakers, and many finalists, including several students who are new to the team! Our Defender Girls Wrestling Team competed at the MWCA Girls Dual State Championship on Saturday, January 25th, taking home the Consolation Championship! In the first round of 16 teams, Pine City beat the Defenders 46-30, which put them in the consolation bracket. In Rounds two and three, the Defenders beat Hopkins 54-21 and Hutchinson 54-21. In Round 4, our Defenders beat Brainerd, 42-36 to win the Consolation Championship! Monika Frericks, Kali Shirmers and Krista Klassen went 4-0 in their four matches! Woot-woot! Congratulations to the Knowledge Bowl Teams who competed at Apollo High School this past Saturday! Of the 47 varsity and 19 junior varsity teams competing. Melrose Varsity won the meet with a score of 114. Chaska was second with 104, and third place went to Buffalo with 96. Melrose Varsity had two additional teams participating, who finished fifteenth and thirty-second. Melrose JV finished sixth. Our Defender Girls Wrestling Team had a great night of wrestling on Friday, January 17th! The girls went 3-0, beating Annandale Maple Lake 60-11! They also beat two ranked opponents: #4 STMA 42-35 and #9 Mora 45-25. Their next wrestling action is the State Championship Duals on Saturday, January 25th at St. Michael Albertville. Wrestling begins at 10:30am.
